Who We Are?

The ELA is the Canadian national association of persons interested in historical and current issues about  archives, libraries, publishing houses, and related institutions and the people working in them;

• association constitution and bylaws;
• Executive board and committees, meeting dates;
• long range plans;
• history of the Association formed 1986;
• Membership information, profile, and benefits

What We Do?

• ELA's Annual General Meeting. ELA members get together annually at an AGM to listen, talk, argue, and laugh. The 2010 AGM was held on Monday, Nov. 1, 9:30 a.m. at North York Central Library.
• ELA boards and committees--members plan and  promote activities to further ELA goals;  other members may attend these board meetings when space is available; ELA cooperates  with other organizations on matters of mutual interest for example,  with CLA it  sponsors the W. Kaye Lamb award for excellence in library services to seniors;
• ELA  publishes ELAN our newsletter, regularly and other items on occasion;
• ELA engages in a variety of historical initiatives related to information services  in archives, libraries,  publishing houses, and  other cultural organizations; ELA has several internet activities, including this
• Web/Wiki site, a Electronic Mailing List; and in the planning stage, a forum/bulletin board ;
• ELA lists opportunities to volunteer to help libraries or other related organizations.
• ELA publishes Occasional Papers by members
• Sponsor sessions with other groups.

• thanks to the work of Jean Wheeler, two indexes to ELAN's issues are available to help locate people and subjects. The first index covers the years 1987 to 1999 and the second index covers the period 2000 to 2009. Please note that the Adobe Acrobat reader is required to read these PDF files. If you do not as yet have Acrobat Reader you can download the free software before trying to view and print the indexes.
• ELAN volunteers: opportunities to contribute book reviews, etc.to ELAN.

• chronologies related to Canadian library and information studies education;
• a wide ranging collection of articles in ELAN related to historical topics ;
• The Morton Years;
• ELA archives;
• a call to preserve Canadian library archival records;
• ELA is engaged in developing a database of Biographies of Librarians and Information Professionals in Canada, a significant part of whose lives was spent in libraries, archives, publishing and related information fields,a significant part of whose lives were spent in  libraries, archives, publishing  and related information fields.
